A Dream Came True- Sri Kebaya
Yesterday was the day where we managed to make someone dream a reality. During my interview with the owner of Sri Kebaya, Miss Sunyta Ali about a year ago on her plans in improving the sales at the shop and also to promote Malaysia food in this region; she voiced out her problems and struggles she had gone through eversince the shop was in operation way back in January 2008. She didn't get much backing from anyone else and on top of that ,there were also some critisism that the food are too pricy. She mentioned that she had no choice on the pricing since most of the ingredients are imported from Malaysia. I can understand her arguement because a vegetable like morning glory or 'kangkong' only cost a few ringgit in Malaysia, costs more than QR 10 here in Doha.
The idea about the Food and Fashion Galore mooted about 2 weeks ago when she told us that she would like to invite us for a food tasting and photography session for her new ranges of menu after being in business for more than 2 years on the same menu. It was during that occasion we asked her, if that was the only thing she wanted to do and she answered "Yes". I suggested that why don't we create an event to it and that was when the idea of Project Runway came into being. Just to have fun among our friends here. Having seen the miracle and the excitement we had during the Project Runway.... she called us up the next day and say... W"hy don't we do a Food and Fashion Show?". Dwan and me said "Yes, It is a great idea and let's do it.." However, initially, she received some comments about her idea and her morale was very low. We assured her we will stand by her to make it a success. We told her, "go and catch your dream no matter what it takes". "No matter what people says". Coz it doesn't cost a things for them to say negative things that could make we sad but if we look at it on the positive side, we could try to improve our weakness based on people's comments.... She went to Baladia that morninng, the authority resposible for hosting such events and they had no objections. That was when it all began. We started to see some lights to this project of hers. With the aid three managers, Me, Dwan and Sunyta we knew we could do it and make it happen.
Since this is our first time of doing it, we had to learn as we go along. First of all we had to advertise for a freelance models in Qatar Living A few came and we interviewed each and everyone. To be honest there are some good individual who has the talent of being a model but perhaps they don't have the opportunity. With that, it simplifies our task especially in getting everything done in a week. We felt they are meant for us. We had daily rehearsal in the evening. Dwan showed them the way to walk and pose while I do the usual things i.e. taking pictures.
The whole event was orchestrated by Dwan, thanks to him. I was told to be the MC for the night. Something which never did before but I will try to give my best shot. Sunyta drafted the text and I edited it to suit the programme.
The night before teh even when everything was set; we started to review the event step by step to ensure that everything is in order. Then Dwan came up with and idea about a door gift. So we said why don't we give a bunga rampai and bunga telur? And we agreed. Since we only have less than 24 hours left, we straight away went to the shop to buy pandan leaves, eggs, ribbon and some colourful fabrics. That very night we prepared the bunga rampai, boiled the eggs and cut the fabrics.
And when I came in to the shop the next day during day of the event. I found it out amazingly the whole setting was perfect; with the table setting, the food and projection screen etc.
The guests started to arrive at 6.45pm and most of the invited distinguished guests were also present. Thanks to our Ambassador Dato Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaacob for the support he had given us. The fashion show the models were great as if they were professional.
We received lots of compliments by the distiguished guests and other guests. Insyallah, we will work another project or perhaps a Malay weddings. Honestly, we are honoured to be part of it to promote Malaysia the food, the fashion here in Doha so that more and more people will know about us a multi racial and cultural country.

Assalamualaikum and A Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen
Selamat Datang and Welcome to Sri Kebaya
His excellency Dato Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaacob, Malaysian Ambassador to Qatar.
Madam Datin Izdina Izaidin, wife of Malaysian Ambassador.
Excellencies and Madam, Distinguished Guest
Ladies and Gentlemen.
The name Kebaya is inspired from Arab region clothing where the Arabic word “abaya” means clothing. According to Wikipedia, A Kebaya is a traditional blouse-dress combination worn by women in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Burma, Singapore, southern Thailand and some parts of Cambodia. It sometimes made from sheer material and usually worn with a sarong or batik kain panjang, or other traditional woven garment such as ikat, songket with a colorful motif.
Based on this concept, Sri Kebaya has created a traditional Malaysian ambience and identity in the restaurant displaying Kebaya costumes, accessories to be worn with the costumes such as Kerongsang, colourful Malaysia batik sarungs and also games like ‘Congkok’; so that people will not only have the feel of Malaysia but also a taste of Malaysia. Some of the wooden motifs in the restaurant are specially crafted in the east coast of Malaysia.
Malaysia being a multi racial country with a mixture of Malay, Chinese and Indian have been living in harmony way back since year 1500s and the culture of these three main races have also been influenced by Persian, Arab and European.
Based on this we would like to express our ideas and creativity to people around this region about our roots where we came from such a beautiful country with multicultural background.
The beauty behind food represent our culture and history. Food not only an important medium of communication within culture. In Southeast Asia, food functions as an ethnic marker as well, distinguishing one cultural group from another.
Malaysian Cuisine reflects the multicultural aspects of Malaysia. Various ethnic groups in Malaysia have their own dishes, but many dishes in Malaysia are derived from multiple ethnic influence. Food preparation differs from place to place, even though they are all cooking the same food. Different preparations have different taste and decoration, but generally the ingredients used are the same.
Being multicultural country, Malaysian have over the years adapted each other’s dishes to suit the taste buds of their own culture for instance, Malaysian Chinese have adapted the Indian curry, and made it more dilute & less spicy to suit their taste. Chinese noodle have been crossed with Indian & Malay taste and thus Malay fried noodles were born.
In home and Restaurant throughout Malaysia and most Asia, food is seldom served in individual portion. Main dishes and condiments are normally placed on the table for people to help themselves, family style. Malaysian food are the combinations of Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine.
As part of the introduction to our Malaysian food for those who are new with Malaysian food; we are serving you today:-

For those who like the taste of our food and like to try some of the range of our new menus either a’ la carte or special of the day, and you are most welcome to come again.
Our restaurant is open daily Saturday to Wenesday from 8.30 am to 12.00 midnight, Thursday and Friday from 9.00 am to 1 am in the morning.
Before we move on the highlights of tonight i.e. the fashion show, we would like to call upon His Excellency Dato Muhammad Shahrul Ikram, Malaysia Ambassador to Qatar to say a few words and officiate our Food and Fashion Galore 2010.
On behalf of the Owner of Sri Kebaya, Miss Sunyta Ali, we wish to extend our gratitude to His Excellency Dato Muhammad Shahrul Ikram, for his kind words and his enlightening speech including the support he and his family have been given us for making this event a reality.

Now, we have come to the main highlights of tonight but before we begins, we wish to inform you that the outfits we going to present to you tonight is Sunyta’s very own personal collections which reflects traditional Malaysian outfits.
Without further ado, we shall start with the first batch of outfit which is ..
The Chinese outfit called Cheongsam
The traditional clothes for Chinese women is the Cheongsam which means “long Dress” or Qipao (Chee Pau).
The cheongsam is a female dress with distinctive Chinese features and enjoys a growing popularity in international high fashion.
When the early Manchu rulers came to China prosper, they organized certain people, mainly manchus, into “banners” and call them “banner people” which then became loosely the name of all manchus. The manchu’s women wore normally a one pcs dress which, likewise, came to be called”qipao (Chee Pau)” or “banner dress”.
Although the 1911 Revolution toppled the rule of Qing(Ching - Manchu) Dynasty, the female dress survived the political change and with later improvements, has become the traditional dress for Chinese women.
This dress is Easy to slip on and comfortable to wear, the cheongsam fits well the female figure. It’s neck is high, colar close and it’s sleeves maybe either short, medium or full length, depending on season and taste.
The dress is buttoned on the right side, with a loose chest, a fitting waist, and slits up from the sides, all of which combine to set off the beauty of a female shape.
All these traditional costume that is timeless. An attire for all occasions, it is elegant, feminine, alluring, sensual, glamorous and fashionable for all ages.
That’s where outfit came with the influence of food. The motive of flowers and Jewelleries enhances the beauty of our traditional outfit.

Baju Kurung;
Baju Kurung is a loose fitting full length dress, consisting of a skirt and blouse. The skirt is made from a long cloth with folding on one side, the blouse is collerless, has long sleeves, and extends to between the hips and knees. The modern Baju Kurung commonly expresses lively colors and geometric patterns.
Traditionalist prefer fabric from peninsular M’sia eastern states of Trengganu and Kelantan, where the culture of batik and other hand-designed fabrics is still long. A women will often wear a baju kurung with a headscarf.
The early baju Kurung was longer and looser unsuited to the figure of malay women. It was popularized in the late 19th century by Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor.
It has been reported the baju kurung has”not only survived, but prospered “ in modern M’sia pointing to it’s popularity in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Baju Kurung is also worn by non-muslims.(including M’sian ethnic Chinese and Indian).
Nowadays, baju kurung can be found in different style. Among are “Baju Kurung Labuh”, Baju kurung Modern, Baju Kurung Cekak(High Color) & Baju Kedah.
Baju Kedah;
Baju Kedah is usually worn by malay women as a daily dress. It is a shorter dress with three-quarter sleeves, so the wearer can move around easily.
Kebaya Nyonya.
A Kebaya is traditional blouse-dress combination worn by women in South East Asia. It’s sometimes made from sheer material and usually worn with a sarong or batik or other traditional woven garment such as Ikat, Songket with colourful motif.
The term Peranakan Chinese who have lived in the Malay archipelago for centuries. They wear the elegant Kebaya that can be described as traditional high fashion.
The Nyonya Kebaya is a beautiful translucent , figure hugging embroidered blouse worn with batik sarong and beautiful beaded shoes by Peranakan ladies.
Malay Kebaya;
It is one of the clothes that liked by the malay community especially during the year of 1960’s. The Baju Kebaya is a bit like baju kurung except that it is much fitter. It can be match with “Songket” or “Batik”.

In Malaysia, Bunga Telur (Flower Egg) is a hard boiled egg and it is a guest favour at a Malay Wedding symbolizing fertility and here it symbolizes prosperity. Bunga Rampai is fragrant flowers made of pandan leaves and mixture of flowers with rose water and other fragrances.
